The hardest part of my day is... fighting traffic on the way to/from the big city {near my house}. When you live in a small town, you say things like "I'm going out of town." People know what that means; we all go out of town around here. It doesn't mean an overnight trip; it means you're driving to the city for something.
I love this song. Small Town.
I used to work out of town. I went to college out of town. Now, I drive my baby to appointments out of town--twice a week. The drive down the country roads to the 4-lane highway isn't so bad--lots of birds, animals, a few cars; it's kinda nice, really. But, when you get to the big road, everyone starts driving crazy. I'm serious. It's like there's an intersection that you only turn right at if you're going out of town and once people cross the line that goes that direction, they just turn into McStupids.
Minivans full of children will zip past you and disappear into the distance. People in busted up hoopties will roar around you as their car bounces along 65mph in the 45-zone... you'll be praying "dear God, please don't let their hood fly off and backslap my windshield."
It's not just speeders, its the mind-blowing bad decisions people make while driving/biking/running that really get to you. You find yourself yelling things {to no one in particular} like:
- "What, $35k can't buy you TURN SIGNALS?!" or
- "Slow your roll, Grandmaaaa"
- "You're running toward traffic so YOU can move out of MY way, dumba... um, silly willy!" (ever have one of the joggers run right toward your car and you have to swerve to miss them? Yeah, me too)
Becoming a parent really changes the way you think. I can say that I've realized how selfish it is to speed and have total disregard for the safety of other drivers while you're on the road. It's a lack of caring for their families, as well--their families at home, their family in the car, their friends that love them. Really, why tailgate someone when you're all up on their child's seat? Why cut people off when you could wait one more minute (like you do at McDonald's/Walmart/Target)? The world does not revolve around you, but someone's life could end because of you...
People are all "don't smoke/drink around children because that's harmful." Then, they get in their vehicle and drive nonstop 10000mph--and that's ok. A car wreck is much more dangerous to a child than second-hand smoke. (note: I don't smoke. I'm just sayin.)
BUT...
The good part is that there are times when the road is pretty clear until you get really close to where we're going :) It happens and I love it.

He looks exhausted, but he's just so sweet :) |
Although, this hour-long journey is filled with trees, horses and, occasionally, selfish adults, it's not in vane.
I drive out of town to get to important places. I drive safely. At red lights, I enjoy the beautiful face that's grinning at me in my rear view mirror--oh, and my little Noah's pretty face, too. :) jk
Have a great weekend!
May the highway fairies bring you good driving distance,
no crap in your lane, and sunny days <33
What's the hardest part of YOUR day?
I guess we are lucky, we don't live in a big city, but we also don't live in the country either. We live in suburbia, where yes there could be traffic, but I don't really need most times to go anywhere that I would get stuck in it. But could very much see how that could be a problem and make for that part of your day to be the worst. Thanks for sharing and linking up, too!! :)
ReplyDeleteThat sounds very frustrating! It is easy for me to lose my cool and get impatient when stuck in the car... Thanks for an excellent reminder to slow down when driving!
ReplyDeleteWe live near DC and driving can be a nightmare! I get really annoyed with stupid drivers who don't put on their turn signals as well - annoying. And yes to slow down already! Precious cargo here!
ReplyDeleteI totally know what you mean. We used to live near DC and the traffic was horrendous. I mean absolutely crazy! Thank goodness for the Metro system there, which is usually how I got to work, but even THAT could be out of control. People. And I so hate when others don't use their turn signals!
