#iHeartMyNailArt: Roses and Rock 'n' Roll nail art!

"All you have to do is..." is the long-used tagline for Daydreaming Realist. Please be respectful and do not copy from other bloggers.

A great way to save money and be spontaneous is to repurpose things you have around the house.

Make Your Own Nail Art Tools:

An old eyeliner brush (from an empty liquid eyeliner bottle) becomes a detail brush
A dull pencil (or empty marker) works as a dotting tool
Toothpicks can be used for water marbling

You can use a paper plate or even a postcard as your nail polish paint palette. Putting dots of paint on a plate will make the polish more accessible for freehand art and it also keeps the bottle from sitting around, ya know, waiting to be tipped over. Painting your nails on the bed is so comfortable, but sitting at a table (or outside) will make it a lot easier :)

To create summery nail art or a fun, band-inspired design, all you have to do is... pick up some Sally Hansen polish from Walgreens! It's quick, affordable and so convenient.

Rock band-inspired nail design(s)

I really like rock music and the whole rock star look, so I designed something that's a little darker and edgier for my rock-music-loving friends out there. The black Fuzzy Coat polish (Tweedy) immediately reminded me of this Ramones album cover, because it just screams punk rock. The beautiful red color of Xtreme Wear polish (Red Carpet) inspired me to create a rose design (like Guns 'n Roses, of course); I wanted something freehand and personal, so I painted it on with an old eyeliner brush that I have.

I love the way it looks in each photo before I even finished the design. I'm definitely planning to create more looks with these and create a "Concert Series" of nail designs for my blog.

What you'll need:
  1. Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat in Tweedy.
  2. Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in
    • Red Carpet
    • Golden-I
    • Black Out
    • Green with Envy
Instructions:
  1. Alternate the colors on your nails between red and black polish.
  2. Paint a small, uneven red circle on your fourth nail (ring finger). Allow this to dry completely.
  3. Paint in details of the rose with pink, gold or black polish. You will make 3-4 little swirl marks that are shaped like a "c".
  4. Add leaves with green Sally Hansen nail color.
  5. Top off your pointer fingernail and pinky fingernail with Fuzzy Coat polish (I used Tweedy).
  6. You can add an optional flower to your middle finger or leave the vines for interest.
  7. Top off all of your nails with a clear topcoat.
The flower is freehand and no two nail art flowers are ever the same~ just like with real flowers. Roses are challenging to paint, so don't plan for perfection ~ let it be artistic :)

NOTE: The Fuzzy Coat polish isn't glitter; it's tiny bits of confetti that's blended with a clear nail polish, so you can add it over any base color that you choose. Black polish looks really great under the black Fuzzy Coat.

A few other works of art

Walgreens has a TON of Sally Hansen nail colors and manicure supplies. I also love the sales they have and the fact that you can use your Balance Rewards card and coupons with your purchases (I saved a lot that way). It's also nice that Walgreens is less hectic than a super store, so you can look longer and relax while you're shopping.

I created a vintage rose design; pink looks so good on red, doesn't it? I painted this on my nail wheel a few times before trying it on myself. You can see how to do this in the first photo--just add the white, c-shaped swirls to the pink roses.

The gold polish (Golden-I) is beautiful. I also like the black Fuzzy Coat over pink. Fuzzy Coat really is the perfect name for this polish, because the texture looks like fabric.

See the girly skull hanging out in the "test zone"? :)

I'm now on Instagram! @daydreamingrealist

Quick mani instructions for the Polka Dot design:

I love this colorful nail art design! I couldn't choose which bright colors I wanted, so I bought them all! {typical girl probs}. It was SO quick to do this~ all you have to do is... paint your nails with a base color (I used white for all of my nails, except the pink one) and top it off with Fuzzy Coat polish. The polka dots were made with an empty marker that I used as a dotting tool ;)

What's your go-to nail color?

Have you ever tried Sally Hansen polishes? :)

Love,

  4. lol I always love when you stop by here!! Girl, you can use those empty eyeliner pens/brushes for good~ all you have to do is... wash it out in the sink with soap and water and dry it off and you're ready to go. I keep a paper towel to remove the polish and I dip the eyeliner brush/pen into a little cup of polish remover to clean it up :) easy-peasy. The Fuzzy Coat polishes are cool, too, because you can make them either light and sweet or funky and crazy :D I did a "Cupcake look" with these and I'm SO posting that this week, because it's really pretty. I love classic pink a lot, too, so I totally feel ya on that one, but it's really fun to do something different and then mellow out with the classics <33 Thank youuuu, darlin'~ you're too sweet! Go wash that liner pen out and make some more dots on Toodie, soon lol. xoxo. {toothpicks are great for so many things~ from crafts to polish (: }

  5. Oooh LA LA! Pretty nails for days :) This post is seriously full of awesomeness. I have so many empty liquid eyeliner containers and I never thought to even consider them for nail designs. I tested out the whole "dotting" method on Toodie using a toothpick and it came out pretty cool. I do have an old Physicians Formula felt tip pen liner that I will be trying out next time we do nails. Those Sally Hansen fuzzy polishes have been on my shopping list for quite some time. I have tried them out a few times at the store but wasn't sure exactly what I could do with them. I am so weird when it comes to my nails. I am a little scared to be adventurous! I guess I should probably step out of my box and explore a little. There seems to be more out there other than the classic French and pinks! After all, I do love painting my own nails so I might as well explore. You did such a great job on your nails, im jelly-poo! Teach me your wayysssss. Pretty nails for a pretty girl :) Hope your having a great Sunday too!

  7. The polka dots are soooo easy to do, you should totally try that one out on you {and Sofia}! <3 That's the first time I did the big red rose; I usually try to do the little, pink rose buds, but thought I'd post both. :) What's cool about that Fuzzy Coat polish that it covers up mistakes and imperfections (dips, dents, smudges)~ I love that. I did this other really awesome design that's similar to the last one on this post (in color, but totally different DIY technique) and I'll post that soon. Thank you so much! xo. I hope your family is enjoying the weekend, too! xoxo

  8. Girl I love this post!! It's so fun and different ~ I've always wanted to do my own nail art, but I felt like I couldn't do it myself. This tutorial and the DIY nail art tools are so helpful...I might need to try it now! I love the nail dotting and that fuzzy nailpolish. Oh and I pinned this post to my DIY board, too :) Hope your weekend is going well! xoxo

  9. Thank youuu~I'm so happy that you like it! The Fuzzy Coat nail polish is so different than I had imagined it. I thought it would be like glitter polish, but it's nothing like glitter. It's fun to use it over the black polish, but it's so pretty to use the Fuzzy Coat colors over yellow polish! It really does create unique looks =)

  10. Using an empty eyeliner as a dotting tool is so smart! I love the design you created with it! It's also cool to see how you've incorporated the fuzzy nail polishes into your nail art. It definitely gives a unique look!
