One of the greatest experiences of my life was taking piano lessons as a child.
As a child, I craved more knowledge of music theory and wanted to play piano. When our school music teacher offered private music lessons, I was elated! I loved learning to read music, the sound of each note that I played correctly, the excitement of learning something new and the sense of importance that piano lessons gave me. During my music lessons, I felt like I was finding my place in the world and expressing myself through sound; it was nice to have that one-on-one time with someone who shared an interest of mine. I took piano lessons for a while, but due to my parents' divorce, I soon had to stop taking the private lessons. I still learned about music and instruments at school; I tried to practice piano at home (on my own) with my book until I completed the whole thing. I've always said, "when I grow up, I will take music lessons again and I will play music because I love it!." Well, I'm getting pretty grown up, so it's time to start looking for a professional instructor :)
I found takelessons.com by Googling "where to find local music teachers?" As as parent, what I like about the takelessons.com is that all of the instructors are pre-screened and certified before they are listed on the site. The instructors have ratings from current/former students of theirs, and a resume page with their professional background information--which is a huge asset when you're trying to choose your instructor. TakeLessons offers a money-back guarantee and handles all of the scheduling and payments through their online system; you don't have to pay the instructor in person.
Online Music Lessons
We live in a small town (cue the John Mellencamp song), so I often cannot find exactly what I'm looking for here, but I can find places in nearby towns. I have an interest in piano, acoustic guitar and classical guitar; TakeLessons can connect me with the right instructors for all of these interests of mine. Takelessons.com not only has local music instructors, it also offers online music lessons with an instructor--online music lessons! Yes! This is a huge plus for people with busy schedules or if you have a lack of transportation--the music lessons can come to you. The instructor will work with you through your web cam and microphone, so you will get instructions tailored to your individual performance, goals and current skill level.
Music Lessons for Children
I'm interested in finding a music instructor for my 5-year-old son. He loves, loves music. I have a keyboard and guitar here and he really enjoys "playing music" on them, so I know he'd like to try proper lessons of his own. I feel safe using takelessons.com, because I know that only credible, reputable instructors can list their teaching services there; that gives me peace of mind as a mommy. There's so much for him to gain from a music education and I'd like to offer him the chance to explore music more seriously.
Since my son is so young, I'm not sure if he would prefer piano lessons or drum lessons. With TakeLessons.com, I can find instructors who will guide me to the right instrument for my son's personal interest. The program is flexible--which gives you control to try different instructors and find the best fit for your child's style and schedule.
Benefits of a Music Education for Children:
- Musical training improves memory, language skills and listening skills. Studies have shown that this combination leads to improved ability to learn a second language
- Playing music, especially duets and in small groups, teaches children how to work as part of a team, an important skill they will need in school and later at work
- Children who study and perform music gain confidence and learn to conquer stage fright.
- Playing music provides a healthy means of self-expression (particularly useful for those who have trouble putting thoughts/feelings into words)
- Studying music improves a child’s ability to understand spatial-temporal relationships, a skill which can help in fields ranging from math and engineering to architecture and gaming
- Playing an instrument improves hand-eye coordination and nuanced muscle control, as musicians must make very precise gestures in order to play their instruments correctly
- Keeping up a steady practice schedule instills great discipline and work ethic in kids, teaching them to work hard and be patient
- Learning a musical instrument and performing improves a child’s self-esteem (it feels good to have a special talent to share with others)
Incidentally, I also noticed that takelessons.com offers free online guitar lessons and free online singing lessons! Its a download (trial) that you can check out on their site.
I'm excited to get started, how about you?
