I take Noah to the library every week to let him choose a few books and play along with the other children in the children's area. I feel a good balance of social outings and online play help him develop his language skills and personal interests. Because Noah (like all children) loves, loves the iPad, I downloaded the free trial of Bookboard for him to enjoy at home or on-the-go.
Bookboard is a smartphone app that is available as a free trial or as a paid service with more features. The Bookboard app offers a virtual library of over 400 eBooks for children to read. Each book includes easy page turning and illustrations (it's the virtual version of a real book).
If you want to try Bookboad, all you have to do is... create an account online here, first.

I named his profile "Baby Bear" and my profile "Mama Bear." |
The app rewards children with additional books as the child completes the reading of a book from the virtual library. Noah really enjoys seeing the key appear to tell him that he's unlocked a new book; Noah's really interested in keys right now and how they work, so this is extra exciting for him. :)
Bookboard offers a variety of books that are sorted into age-appropriate groupings for children up to 12 years old. The books are kept under individual profiles, so each reader can read at their own pace and choose their own books. It's easy to choose your user profile from the homepage. Noah (age 5), can open the app and choose his profile and a book all by himself. I read the books to him and he turns the pages. The Bookboard app is useful for integrating modern technology into your child's educational playtime. Another perk is you don't have to worry about library late fees.
What I like the most about our experience with the free trial Bookboard app:
- It offers a free trial so you can try before you buy.
- There are over 400 book titles available (in the complete library).
- The books in the child's library are curated according to the child's age. The library will change and evolve with your child's age and reading level.
- Limited amount of books are offered in the beginning to encourage reading a book in it's entirety (in order to unlock a new book).
- The app's layout and design are pleasant to use.
- There aren't a ton of ads popping up and launching browser windows.
Would I recommend this app for parents/educators? Yes. Absolutely.
The lite version/free trial of Bookboard is definitely worth checking out. You can sign up at Bookboard.com and start a free trial and see it for yourself! You don't have to give a credit card number; it's just a lite version of the app. Try it out and let me know what YOU think in the comment section below! :)

Do you let your child use your iPad or Smartphone?
I used a free version of the Bookboard app. This review was written by me and includes screenshots of our experience with the free trial of Bookboard app. This review was sponsored as part of a campaign with sverve.
